Mar 18, 2017 Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 10.11.6 Combo Update ineligible? Posted on Mar 18, 2017 10:22 AM Reply I have this question too ( 32 ) I have this question too Me too (32) Me too.
This is the third public update to OS X El Capitan operating system to date, with the initial release of OS X El Capitan arriving on September 30 of this year. OS X El Capitan 10.11.1 was released on October 21, which included a slate of new emoji, support for Microsoft’s Office suite of products, and other tweaks and improvements. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 Combo Update as needed. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button. Erase and Install OS X Restart the. Double-click the Mac OS X Update Combo package file (it looks like a little box or package) found on the mounted disk image. Click Continue and walk through the update installer as usual. Select the target hard drive for the Combo Update to be installed onto (typically the Macintosh HD startup disk) and click “Install”.
I installed El Capitan and since then my iMac won't start up - it hangs at the grey screen with Apple logo and loading bar. I have literally tried and researched everything;
Unplugged the computer and waited
Unplugged and held in the power button
Tried to start up in Safe mode - it won't
Tried the startup manager (Option key at startup)
Tried OS X Recovery mode (Cmd + R at start up)
Tried Cmd, option, P and R
Removed my extra ram and replaced it...
I know there is nothing wrong with my hardware as I did run the First Aid test and no errors were found - discs work perfectly. My thought is that it should be the OS that causes this as I had no errors beforehand.
I have read here that if I install the combo update, this might solve my issue. My question is: when will it be released?
I have made an appointment at my local Apple store but before then I want to try and solve this myself (I only have backups of my most important files, so if I can avoid erasing my disc, this would be awesome).
Thanks in advance.

To get the latest features and maintain the security, stability, compatibility, and performance of your Mac, it's important to keep your software up to date. Apple recommends that you always use the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

Check compatibility
The version of macOS that came with your Mac is the earliest version it can use. For example, if your Mac came with macOS Big Sur, it will not accept installation of macOS Catalina or earlier.
If a macOS can't be used on your Mac, the App Store or installer will let you know. For example, it might say that it's not compatible with this device or is too old to be opened on this version of macOS. To confirm compatibility before downloading, check the minimum hardware requirements:
- macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements
- macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements
- macOS High Sierra 10.13 hardware requirements
- macOS Sierra 10.12 hardware requirements
- OS X El Capitan 10.11 hardware requirements
- OS X Yosemite 10.10 hardware requirements
